These requirements cover electrically and electronically operated speakers that provide speech communication anddistinctive sounds in conjunction with fire protective signaling systems for indoor or outdoor locations, or both, inaccordance with the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72.
These requirements do not cover speakers for use in hazardous locations asdefined in the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.
These requirements do not cover commercial equipment for institutional andindustrial use or theater equipment . Commercial sound equipment is covered by the Standard for Commercial Audio Equipment,UL 813.
Speakers having integral amplifiers are covered under these requirements and the applicable requirements in the Standardfor Amplifiers for Fire Protective Signaling Systems, UL 1711.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered bythe requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall beevaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain theacceptable level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard. A product whose features,characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this standardcannot be judged to comply with this standard. Where considered appropriate, revision of requirements shall be proposed andadopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.
