This White Paper provides a recommendation that dental practices use the same, accepted, NCPDP standard for use by software systems that has been adopted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Currently, there are integrated and standalone solutions. In some states, they have been mandated. The white paper presents and establishes guidelines for electronic prescriptions in dentistry. The NCPDP/SCRIPT standard addresses pharmaceutical prescription transactions between provider/office practice and retail pharmacy and currently has the broadest acceptance in the ambulatory setting.
